Picture of the Country of New Holland South Wales

1866
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (Japanese, 1839–1892) Published by Iseya Kisaburō
The title of this print probably refers to New South Wales, Australia, which was scarcely known to Japanese people in the nineteenth century. The insertion of "Holland" in the title reveals the confusion about geographic names and locations that Japanese artists had at this time, although they were rapidly expanding their knowledge of other countries.
